- 50% of Basic Salary: If you live in a metro city (cities with a population of more than 25 lakhs), you are eligible to receive 50% of your basic salary as HRA.
- 40% of Basic Salary: If you live in a non-metro city (cities with a population of 25 lakhs or less), you are eligible to receive 40% of your basic salary as HRA.
- The least of the above three values is considered for tax exemption on HRA.
It’s important to note that HRA is partially taxable. The amount that exceeds the least of the three values mentioned above is subject to income tax.
Also, individuals who do not receive HRA as part of their salary can claim a deduction for the rent paid under Section 80GG of the Income Tax Act, subject to certain conditions.
